Development of cast magnesium alloys
Casting magnesium alloy can be roughly divided into three stages:
(1) The first stage is a basic stage in which aluminum and zinc are mainly added to magnesium, namely Mg-A1-Zn series alloys. The tensile strength of these alloys is similar to that of cast aluminium alloys. ZM5 in China, L121 in the UK and AM80A in the US all belong to this kind of alloy. The main added element is aluminum, and the content of zinc is low, mainly because when the content of zinc increases, it is easy to appear microscopic porosity.
(2) The second stage is an improvement stage in which zirconium is added to magnesium. Common zirconia-containing alloys include Mg-Zn-Zr, Mg-RE-Zr, etc. The main function of zirconium in magnesium alloy is to refine the grain, so as to improve the yield strength of magnesium alloy, and make the magnesium alloy have good fatigue resistance and low notch sensitivity. The disadvantage is still because the crystallization interval is wide, easy to appear microporous and hot cracking tendency. Therefore, the zirconium free die casting magnesium alloy Mg-Al is the most widely used. In addition, in order to improve the creep resistance of magnesium alloys at high temperature, magnesium alloys with rare earth elements as main components are produced.
(3) The third stage is to add silver into the magnesium alloy in the lifting stage. Silver alloying can enhance the aging strengthening effect, greatly improve the high temperature strength and creep resistance of the magnesium alloy, but reduce the corrosion resistance of the alloy.
